Located in Big Sur, California, the Point Sur Visitor Center is an adaptive reuse project, designed on the abandoned Point Sur Naval Listening Station adjacent to the Point Sur Lighthouse. The design of the structures is derived from the movement of sand dunes across the site, while its main orientation is based on the movement of the prevalent winds along the coast. Its European grass covered roofs blend into the wind-blown grasslands ubiquitous on the site. All three elements, the sand, the wind, and the grass are major geological and biological factors in creating the land on which the visitor center will stand, so it is fitting that all three are major design influences that are utilized to seemlessly blend the buildings into their natural surroundings.
