FOXY: The Interactive Restaurant was a collaborative effort that involved the full-scale construction of a dining environment that was created using CAD/CAM manufacturing techniques, robotics, motors, solenoids, acoustic and lighting control. The interactive ceiling was designed and built with the belief that a restaurant’s ceiling should respond to its patrons. The CeilingScape consists of a Lycra/Spandex material stretched above the dining area. Sensors in the seats below tell the ceiling when and where to lower to create a more intimate volume of overhead space above the diners. The ceiling also serves lighting for the resturant, dimming as the ceiling lowers around diners as they eat.
